From small freight to oversized cargo
Amiens – Henry Potez International Airport plays a strategic role in the Airbus logistics network. Alongside the Méaulte plant, which manufactures the entire range of nose sections for the world’s leading aircraft manufacturer, the airport has experience in handling oversize cargo flights. Every week, Beluga XLs come here to load aircraft parts, as they do at the ten other European Beluga airports. These oversized freighters, designed specifically to transport large aeronautical parts, link our hub to the main Airbus production sites. With its 2,200-metre runway and specially adapted facilities, our airport enables the efficient loading and unloading of aircraft components carried by the Belugas. This contributes significantly to the local economy, and any environmental challenges are being actively addressed. We are working closely with Airbus to optimize these operations, in particular by planning flights to reduce noise pollution and by exploring the use of sustainable fuels for these specialized aircraft (SAF – Sustainable Aviation Fuel). Serving Beluga aircraft aligns with our vision of an airport that is both economically efficient and environmentally exemplary.

New: The Pélicandrome label
One of the missions of the French Sécurité Civile is to fight forest and crop fires. We are all familiar with the Canadair water-bombing aircraft that make continuous rounds in the summer to try and put out fires in the South of France. But with climate change, the risk of fires breaking out is increasing in the north of our country. That is why specialized facilities have been designed at airports to accommodate land-based water bombers in regions where water-based refueling is not possible. These facilities are called Pélicandromes. North of Paris, two platforms have been approved: Epinal Airport and Amiens – Henry Potez International Airport.
In the Somme and Haut-de-France, if a fire breaks out twin-engine Dash 8 aircraft can land at our Pélicandrome to be filled with water in less than seven minutes with engines running. Our airport firefighters were trained in Nîmes to carry out this public service mission. Nevertheless, let’s hope that no fire will make it necessary to activate the Pélicandrome in 2024 or 25.
